ABOUT US
Our Team
San Diego Korean Pungmul Institute (SDKPI) is a non-profit organization composed of volunteers dedicated to sharing Korean traditional culture in Southern California.
Our mission is not only to make a positive impact on our community through music and dance, but also to encourage all of our members to be proud of who they are and what they can do for their communities.
History
San Diego Korean Pungmul Institute began in the late 2000s as a small group of family and friends that met up to practice pungmul together at a local community church. By word of mouth, the group grew as students of all ages and from different schools in San Diego started to join.
In the summer of 2012, SDKPI held its very first summer camp in Pasadena, where members learned samulnori from renowned master of Korean traditional dance – Kang Dae Seung. Since then, our members have continued to improve on existing knowledge and learn new forms of Korean traditional music to share with the community.
Our group today has performed all over Southern California at fairs, parades, festivals, weddings, conferences, schools, and all kinds of special events, including the Hollywood Bowl Parade, Moon Festival at Balboa Park, San Diego County Fair, and SeaWorld Lunar New Year. We strive to provide a space for those interested in Korean traditional culture and to make a positive impact on the community through music and dance.
